Reading and Author Signing

Saturday, January 2, 2016
1 to 2 pm in the Reference Room

We are pleased to welcome author David Hlavsa who will read from his book titled Walking Distance: Pilgrimage, Parenthood, Grief, and Home Repairs on Saturday, January 2, with a reception following.

Published by Michigan State University Press, Walking Distance is a story of a couple's love and loss of their baby. The work has received praise from fellow authors. Joanne Cacciatore, Founder, MISS Foundation, and Director of the Center for Loss and Trauma calls Walking Distance a "profoundly unique memoir." She adds: "David Hlavsa invites the reader into a sacred place where the numinous meets the secular, where humor and suffering intersect and where life and death coalesce." For additional information, please contact the Program Office at 845 687-7023, Ext. 108.

TEA TIME BOOK GROUP

Wednesday, January 13
4pm in the Biography Room

The selection this month is The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France, a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. Join us in the Biography Room for lively Discussion and light refreshments.

HOLMES & CO.
Mystery Lovers Book Group

Wednesday, January 20
4pm in the Biography Room

The selection for this meeting is The Little Sister by Raymond Chandler. It is the fifth book in the Philip Marlowe series. The novel centers on the little sister of a Hollywood starlet and has several scenes involving the film industry. It was partly inspired by Chandler's experience working as a screenwriter in Hollywood and his low opinion of the industry and most of the people in it.

CLIO'S MUSE
A History Reading Club

NOTE NEW DATE & TIME:
Saturday, February 27
1pm in the Biography Room

The reading selection for February is The Half has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of Capitalism by Edward Baptist. Told through intimate slave narratives, plantation records, newspapers, and the words of politicians, entrepreneurs, and escaped slaves, The Half Has Never Been Told offers a radical new interpretation of American history. It forces readers to reckon with the violence at the root of American supremacy, but also with the survival and resistance that brought about slavery's end--and created a culture that sustains America's deepest dreams of freedom.

KNITTING GROUP

Every Saturday
10am-noon

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.
