Library Hosts
Local Photographer
Susan Sprachman

The Stone Ridge Library is pleased to announce their winter exhibit featuring Kripplebush resident Susan Sprachman's Travel Photography. The show, titled Looking Beyond: Travel Photographs by Susan Sprachman will be on view through mid-March.

Susan Sprachman's travels have taken her to many parts of the world where she has photographed the everyday and the unremarkable—brooms and brushes in Shanghai; laundry hanging from a balcony in Spain; an abandoned cistern in Kerman, Iran; fish with gills inside out in a market along the quay in Istanbul; retirees sitting on benches in a square in rural Sardinia. In 1969 she took her camera to Ghazni, Afghanistan where she served as a Peace Corps volunteer and continued to develop her photography in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Morocco, and China.

A number of her photographs of Iran appear in Elma Schemenaur's Welcome to Iran (Mankato, MN: Child's World, 2008) and Persian Cuisine: Traditional, Regional, and Modern Foods by M.R. Ghanoonparvar (COSTA MESA, CA: Mazda Publisher, 1982). A photograph she took of Band-e Amir in Afghanistan appeared on a website set up by National Geographic to highlight the geological zones of the world.

In 2015 her works were selected for juried shows at the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum, Art Society of Kingston, and Gallery Lev Shalem in Kingston. In July 2015 she gave a photographic presentation about women in Iran for Arts Mid-Hudson. The Stone Ridge Library will sponsor a similar presentation on March 16, 2016 at the Marbletown Community Center.

TEA TIME BOOK GROUP

Wednesday, February 10
4pm in the Biography Room

The selection this month is The Leopard by Giuseppe di Lampedusa. Set in the 1860s, The Leopard tells the spellbinding story of a decadent, dying Sicilian aristocracy threatened by the approaching forces of democracy and revolution. The dramatic sweep and richness of observation, the seamless intertwining of public and private worlds, and the grasp of human frailty imbue The Leopard with its particular melancholy beauty and power, and place it among the greatest historical novels of our time. Join us in the Biography Room for lively Discussion and light refreshments.

HOLMES & CO.
Mystery Lovers Book Group

Wednesday, February 17
4pm in the Biography Room

The selection for this meeting is Murphy's Law by Rhys Bowen. Molly Murphy escapes from her Irish village after inadvertently causing the death of the young laird who tried to rape her. She finds herself in possession of a steerage ticket to New York and the custody of two small children when the kids' consumptive mother begs her to deliver the youngsters to their father in New York. The passage to America and the tumultuous events of Ellis Island, where another murder takes place, are vividly described, as is Molly's negotiation of the Cherry Street Irish ghetto, Hell's Kitchen, and the children's overwhelmed Da and his unsavory relatives. Run-ins with the police and Tammany Hall are only a few of Molly's adventures. The murder is solved in unorthodox ways, Molly finds love and work, and there's promise of more adventures.

CLIO'S MUSE
A History Reading Club

NEW DATE & TIME:
Saturday, February 27
1pm in the Biography Room

The reading selection for February is The Half has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of Capitalism by Edward Baptist. Told through intimate slave narratives, plantation records, newspapers, and the words of politicians, entrepreneurs, and escaped slaves, The Half Has Never Been Told offers a radical new interpretation of American history. It forces readers to reckon with the violence at the root of American supremacy, but also with the survival and resistance that brought about slavery's end--and created a culture that sustains America's deepest dreams of freedom.

KNITTING GROUP

Every Saturday
10am-noon

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.
