Fall Fundraiser with
Jon Bowermaster

Friday, November 10, 7 pm
Marbletown Community Center

Join us for an evening with National Geographic writer and world adventurer Jon Bowermaster for two brand new documentary films drawn from his ongoing OCEANS 8 project—sea kayaking around the world, one continent at a time, studying the health of the world’s seas and the lives of people who depend on them.

The evening’s program will feature BORDER LAND, from his 2005 expedition kayaking the coast of Croatia and its 1,200 islands, dealing in large part with over fishing in the Adriatic…plus, swimming with 600-pound tuna. Jon has also just finished a documentary from his 1999 expedition to the Aleutian Island. The film, BIRTHPLACE OF THE WINDS, could be his favorite to-date. Jon will be available to chat about his experiences, so we encourage you to join us for this interesting event. Meanwhile, check out Jons website.

Tickets are $10.00 at the door, children are free. Refreshments will be served. Special prizes will be featured.

November Roundtable:

Literacy in the
21st Century

November 6,
7 pm, at the
Marbletown Community Center

The November Roundtable will focus on the issue of literacy in 21st century America. Are we becoming a less literate society? Reading test scores for students decline as they move from elementary to secondary school. The NY state legislature has cut the budget for public libraries. The amount of time spent watching TV each day far exceeds the time spent reading. How serious is this problem for our community? What can we do about it?

ON THE SHELVES

Poughkeepsie Journal 10.1.06
On the Shelves with Anne Jordan

Creators of mystery, suspense in your own back yard

On the Shelves is a monthly column by a rotating list of mid-Hudson Valley library directors who comment on notable books coming to your local public library.

The Poughkeepsie Area Chamber of Commerce has a slogan, "Think Local First," referring to shopping and dining locally. Supporting our local merchants is certainly the best thing for the Hudson Valley. So let's think about local authors, too. The Hudson Valley and surrounding areas are loaded with talent and I can suggest several mysteries and suspense titles to keep you up on these longer, colder nights.

A Stolen Season, by Steve Hamilton; Thomas Dunne Books. "A Stolen Season" is the seventh in Hamilton's Alex McKnight mystery-suspense series. The Ulster County resident sets this story on Michigan's Upper Peninsula along the shores of Lake Superior. Hamilton moves you along at a good clip, never letting the story drag. You will find yourself pulled into the action just as unwittingly as McKnight. When the temperature drops, you'll find yourself grateful you live in the Hudson Valley and not on Michigan's UP where Hamilton shows you just how brutally unforgiving winter can be. You can read this one by itself, but I'm a firm believer in starting a series at the beginning so you may want to check out "Cold Day in Paradise" from your local library.

The Rabbit Factory, by Marshall Karp; MacAdam Cage. Out in L.A., someone has a grudge against a loveable family theme park known as Lamaar's Familyland. Unfortunately, they vent their dislike by murdering people associated with Lamaar, starting with the white fluffy rabbit that walks around the park taking pictures with kids. You won't shed any tears for the dead guy in the rabbit suit, but you may instead find yourself laughing out loud as Karp, a Woodstock resident, propels this novel with a razor-sharp wit and fast-paced story line. Karp brings the Hudson Valley into this novel by having the L.A. detectives fly into Stewart Airport for an interview with a potential suspect who lives in Woodstock. If you like a good comic mystery, Karp will keep the laughs coming while never losing sight of the crime solving action.

You Kill Me, by Alison Gaylin; Signet. Gaylin, a Woodstock resident, sets this novel barely months after 9/11 against the backdrop of a still smoldering lower Manhattan. Samantha Leiffer, nursery school teacher and off-Broadway ticket salesperson, finds herself warned of danger by a complete stranger. When people around her begin to turn up dead, Sam doesn't know who to turn to or trust, including her live-in boyfriend who happens to be a New York City detective. Gaylin tosses in a cast of colorful characters and a good dose of humor to round out the novel. Who is the murderer and just how much danger is Sam in? My guess is you won't guess until the end.

The Final Victim, by Wendy Corsi Staub; Zebra Books. This book is set on the Remington mansion of Savannah, Georgia. Charlotte Remington Maitland is plunged into a nightmare of deceptions that surface after the death of her grandfather. Staub, who lives in Somers, Westchester County, has created a multi-layered novel with characters who all seem suspect; secrets and lies from the past as well as the present result in several murders with Charlotte intended as the final victim. Lock the doors when you read this one.
