Does your teen / tween love to read?

We have a competition that's perfect for them. The Stone Ridge Library is pleased to be taking part in the Mid-Hudson Library System's 6th Annual Battle of the Books. This great book-based competition is for students going into grades 6-9. The "battle" which takes place September 11th encourages young people to get involved with great books, work together as a team, and then gather with other teens in the spirit of friendly competition to test their knowledge. Participants receive eight designated "battle" books, they read them during the summer, get together periodically during the summer to discuss the books, and then attend the battle in September. To become a member of the Stone Ridge Library's Battle of the Books library team speak to Julianna at 687-2044 or email her at julimuth@aol.com

(TEEN ADVISORY GROUP)

Our Teen Advisory Group is under way. The teens have helped to plan children's events, create displays, participated in a float in the Memorial Day Parade, and some have gone on to battle other libraries during the Battle of the Books event. Teens and tweens interested in furthering their participation with the library can join together in this group. Future projects include Holiday Book Sale. If you have ideas about what the library can offer patrons young and older then we want your input too. T.A.G. is a group of teens, run by teens, for teens and the library. Make a Splash – READ!

This summer we'll be exploring water
and guarantee an ocean of fun

The Stone Ridge Library wants to keep your children reading and learning all summer. The summer reading program theme is Make a Splash – READ! We will explore the world of water and water fun through stories, songs, games and other activities about oceans, rivers, lakes, pools, and the creatures that live there. We’ll be exploring water –from bubbles to boats – and guarantee an ocean of fun. The 2010 Summer Reading Program is free and open to children of all ages.

Our story hour schedule will be as follows:
Thursdays, July 8, 15, 22, 29 & August 5, 12

Preschool story time ages 3-5 - 10:00am

Story Hour for grades K-5 -
1:30 - 3:00 OR 3:30 - 5:00pm

Grades 6 & up

Bilingual Story Times

Fridays, July 9, 16, 23, 30 &
August 6, 13 at 2pm

Returning this summer are our bilingual story times with Tamara Kirson.
Every week participants can look forward to cultural stories in English and Spanish. Tamara beautifully blends and balances the two languages while she reads and interacts with story time participants. Through games, choral reading, drama, and crafts the children secure these languages and stories as their own.

These story hours are for the Spanish speaking, and the Spanish learning.

Tamara also plans to incorporate a Spanish language Readers Theater this year for a very exciting program.

Bilingual story times are for children 7 years old and older and parents are encouraged to stay and participate too.

Red Cross Babysitter Training

Tuesday, July 6th from 9:30 – 4:00

The Stone Ridge Library is offering the Red Cross Babysitter Training course, designed for 11- to 15- year-olds, the course can be completed in just one day and includes information on how to:

• Care for children and infants.
• Be a good leader and role model.
• Make good decisions and solve problems.
• Keep the children you babysit and yourself safe.
• Handle emergencies such as injuries, illnesses and household accidents.

The course also covers health topics such as how germs can be transmitted among children; knowing when hand washing is needed; and why the babysitter’s and child’s hands must be kept clean when babysitting.

To register for this program you must pay $30, payable to the Stone Ridge Library (the class is normally $65). Registration for this program is a must and space is limited. Registrants must be 11 years old by the day of the program. If you are interested in this program contact Julianna 687-2044 or stop by the library.

Preschool Water Workshop

July 20, 11:00
3-5 year olds

Those wacky Mad Science guys will be here to conduct a preschool program about water. This program is an interactive, age-appropriate exploration of water designed to captivate the curious nature of young children. Preschoolers enjoy engaging demonstrations, perform simple experiments and will discover how science can help us better understand the world around us! Please register space is limited to 15 participants.

What's in the Water?

July 23, 4:00
all ages

Kathy Johnson will be at the library working with children to explore what you can find in lakes and ponds, rivers and streams, and oceans and seas. Students will be shown the difference between fresh fish and saltwater fish that live in these environments. Participants will also learn about amphibians, salamanders, toads and frogs. Children will be able to explore a discovery box filled with underwater objects, including a wide variety of different shells. The session will conclude with a craft Be sure to stick around for Movie Night and a showing of Finding Nemo.

Movie Night: Finding Nemo

A Disney animated movie about a father-son underwater adventure featuring Nemo, a boy clownfish, stolen from his coral reef home. His timid father must then travel to Sydney and search Sydney Harbor to find Nemo. rated G. Popcorn and juice to be served.

Picture Book Party with the Rainbow Fish

During this program we will spend some time celebrating that fabulous fish from Marcus Pfister's book "Rainbow Fish." About the little fish who learns the rewards of sharing. This program is available to anyone at any age who loves children's picture books and their characters. Join us for a story, songs, games and a simple craft.

Fire & Ice

July 28, 2:00
ages 4 and up

Those wacky Mad Science guys will be here for some sizzlin' excitement! Join us for safe and scientific fun with fire and ice! Learn about the amazing properties of fire and combustion. Then, cool off with spectacular demonstrations involving dry ice! Check out the 'Big Burp', the 'Screwdriver Sizzle' and the famous 'Mad Science Bath', as we will explore the science behind this amazing frozen gas. All Mad Science shows provide live, interactive, and compelling educational experiences that make learning a blast!

Annual Tea Party

Arr, me hearties, the annual tea party this year won't be for landlubbers, but for ye pirate queens and kings! We'll have much yo-ho-ho-ing, dine like fine buccaneers, and enjoy some crafts with yer mates. Ye teen pirates will be performing another fabulous play for the enjoyment of all. So be sure to anchor your ship at the library and join ye fun! Arrr!
