The Beauty of Pressed Botanical Specimens by David Schaengold

Art Exhibit Opening January 9 – February 25
Artist Reception Saturday, January 21 from 1-3 in the Activity Room

David Schaengold is a resident of Stone Ridge who in the summer of 2019 first began pressing flowers and leaves as a form of self-expression. His work has been shown in group shows at the Olive Free Library, Byrdcliffe Guild, Woodstock Jewish Congregation, and The Woodstock Artists Association and Museum. He had a solo exhibition of his work in July 2021 at the Sam’s Point Gallery of Minnewaska State Park, Cragsmoor, New York.

Artist’s statement: Collecting, identifying and mounting flowers and leaves has broadened my appreciation for the natural beauty surrounding me as well as the cycle of the seasons in the Hudson Valley. As I continue this activity, I am increasingly beholding the specimens’ appeal and resilience to the elements; the delicacy of the blossom, richness of color, elegance of the stem, fineness of the roots and intricate pattern of the leaves. The resulting specimen mounted in a picture frame pressed under glass is like a memory; vivid at first, fading year to year, recalling a past moment in time.

All proceeds of sales from this exhibit will be donated to the Stone Ridge Library and the Rondout Valley Food Pantry. Thank you David for your generosity to both the library and the food pantry.
