The original library building was built by John Lousbery around 1798 and was purchased from the Lounsbery family by Cornelius Hasbrough in 1859. The building passed in turn to his brother, Garret Decker Hasbrouck, in 1861. He lived there with his wife, Julia Lawrence Hasbrouck, and their daughter, Julia Hasbrouck. While most of the building retains its original characters, the two original fireplaces with delft tiles retain the original hardware and woodwork dated at the house’s construction. The building has been a library since 1909, at Julia Hasbrouck’s request.
In 1979, the Library purchased the building to the south and joined it to the main building to expand the library’s footprint. This building is known as the Wood-Elmendorf House. It was built in 1811. Dr. Isaac S. Hasbrouck is the earliest confirmed resident.
